Does a Hamlet have a school or a shop? It said on the lottery quiz it has no church. Is this true?

A hamlet is a place with no church. If there is a shop and school present at the location it is still a hamlet. On the other hand, if you want to know how they classify cities, a place must have a cathedral to be know as a city.

A hamlet is simply a small village. There is no set criteria, it is purely subjective. The church system may be a rule of thumb but there are clear exceptions - just as with cathedral's and cities. As mentioned, Preston is a city with no catherdral, while Blackburn has a cathedral but is not a city.

Ah, now that question puzzled me. Close to where I lived in the southern Lakes there was a small collection of houses. No shop, no school. It did have a pub, a filling station and a church and, when I lived in the area, it's own vicar. I always considered it to be a hamlet. It's called Ings, between Kendal and Windermere. No offence, but it was/is hardly a village!
Ok....I'll Help - Sorry to contradict, but the 'city' classification that you mention does not always apply.


Preston in Lancashire is a city and has no cathedral, and Blackburn, also in Lancashire, does have a cathedral but is not a city.
I always thought that a Hamlet was a cigar. Seriously though, a hamlet is a place with no church.
a hamlet might have no school, no shop and no church. but having no church is the reason it is called a Hamlet.
